Julian Durazo-Herrmann

durazo.julian@uqam.ca

My research is in the field of comparative politics, the study of democracy in Latin America and, more specifically, on the role of the media in politics at the sub-national level in Brazil and Mexico. In particular, my recent work shows that local media systems have particular political dynamics, distinct from national ones, but that they pose substantial challenges to the realization of social pluralism and access to varied and independent sources of information.

My teaching activities focus mainly on an introduction to political science, Latin American political systems and theories of comparative politics.

Tenured professor - Department of Political Science, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM)

My current research focuses on two main areas

  • The role of the media in the constitution and governance of sub-national (state) public spaces
  • The resilience of authoritarian forms of governance and conflict management, and their renewal under new political conditions
