Françoise Montambeault
My research is in the field of comparative politics. It focuses on citizen participation, democracy, social inclusion, broadening access to citizenship rights and redefining the boundaries of citizens' membership of political communities. The participatory institutions and practices at the heart of my work include: 1) the laws, rules and norms framing participatory practices, 2) the formal and institutional mechanisms that enable these rules to be translated into institutionalized practices, and 3) the informal and sometimes more ad hoc modes of citizen participation and engagement in the public sphere, be they individual and unorganized participatory practices or collective and more organized but outside institutions. This approach makes it possible to explore the individual, collective and relational dimensions of citizenship regimes, but also to apprehend the role of alternative, sometimes informal and innovative channels of participation and political representation on democracy and its practices.
My recent work focuses on participatory spaces in Latin America, using practices as a starting point to understand their contours and diversity, and on the effects of these practices on the social and political (re)configurations of state-society relations. In so doing, they show how citizen participation contributes to defining and redefining the contours and boundaries of citizenship regimes, both within and outside state institutions.
Taking a comparative approach, my current research focuses on three main areas
- Citizenship and participatory policies
- Informal participation and (re)defining modes of social inclusion
- Indigenous participation and citizenship
